Training Tools for Translators and Interpreters

The present paper purports to assess the traditional methodologies of training and proposes an eclectic multicomponential approach that involves a set of interdisciplinary skills with the ultimate objective of meeting market demand. The emphasis has shifted in some university programmes in favour of introducing courses on translation for specific purposes (TSP) with the aim of providing first hand vocational training whereby trainees are prepared for the translation market without further ado. TAP (think-aloud protocol) along with self-monitoring and self-evaluation mechanisms go in parallel with the teachers monitoring process in order to build up confidence. Likewise, Group projects help trainee translators to have fair knowledge of the tactics of teamwork cooperation and labour division.

A Formal-Functional Analysis of the English Modal Auxiliaries

Modality refers to the speaker’s attitude towards the judgment of/ or assessment of what he says. The complexity and multi-use of the English modal auxiliaries comprise a serious challenge to FL users. This paper aimed at analyzing them formally and semantically with illustrative examples. A detailed semantic classification is suggested based on authentic linguistic research, viz., deontic, epistemic, and dynamic that cuts across the two major degrees of modality, necessity and possibility.

Some Issues in Translating Nouns in Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s Translation of the Meanings of the Holy Quran

The paper highlights the problems and semantic issues related to nouns that Abdullah Yusuf Ali (undated), in his translation of the meanings of the Holy Quran, could not handle or handled but unsuccessfully. Although he exerted a great effort and succeeded to a large extent in most of his translation of the meanings of the Holy Quran, Abdullah Yusuf Ali failed to convey the meaning pertaining to some nouns.
